Electric Cars – What We’re Seeing in the Workshop
We are starting to see more electric vehicles coming through the workshop, particularly Teslas and Nissan Leafs.
Electric cars are generally very reliable and don’t need the same level of servicing as petrol or diesel vehicles, but they are not maintenance free.
Recently we have been carrying out a number of repairs on EVs, mainly relating to suspension, tyres and general wear and tear items.
Tesla Suspension – Knocking and Squeaking
We had a Tesla in with a complaint of knocking and squeaking from the suspension over bumps.
After carrying out a full inspection, we were able to diagnose wear within the suspension components and carry out the necessary repairs to resolve the issue.
Electric vehicles are typically heavier than conventional cars due to the battery packs, and this can lead to increased wear on suspension components over time.
Is there a warning message about the pollen filter change coming up on your Tesla screen? we can change that too.
Nissan Leaf (Mk3) – Top Mount Noise
Another recent job involved a Mk3 Nissan Leaf with a knocking noise from the front suspension.
This was traced to worn top mounts, which were replaced to restore smooth and quiet operation.
Ball Joints and General Wear
We are also seeing a number of EVs requiring ball joints and other suspension components due to normal wear.
Although electric vehicles have fewer moving parts in the drivetrain, the steering and suspension systems are very similar to conventional cars and still require maintenance.
As with most cars the anti-roll bar links often wear causing knocking and rumbling over rough road surfaces.
Tyres and TPMS Sensors
Tyres are another common area of attention on electric vehicles.
The instant torque from electric motors can lead to increased tyre wear, particularly on higher performance models such as Teslas.
We have also diagnosed and repaired faults with tyre pressure monitoring systems (TPMS), including sensor replacements and system resets.
Do Electric Cars Need Servicing?
While electric cars do not require oil changes or timing belts, they still benefit from regular inspections.
Checking suspension, brakes, tyres and filters can help identify issues early and keep the vehicle safe and comfortable to drive.
