Whilst the MOT test is an essential safety check, regular servicing prolongs the life of mechanical components, helps to maintain roadworthiness and contributes to greater reliability, economy and resale value. With regular servicing you decrease the potential of breakdowns and expensive repairs. Quite often customers ask us if it really necessary to have the oil changed annually, even if the mileage is low. There is no exact answer and with the high quality of the latest fully synthetic long life oils, intervals can be stretched out. On the other hand, as a vehicle gets older, we do see cars that have not had regular oil changes having a dark sludge build up in the oil. Once this sludge forms, it cannot easily be removed - changing the oil will help however once there it never usually goes away. If is possible to use an engine flush to clean out the sludge, however there is a strong risk that thicker sludge may be dislodged and move around to block up the more delicate oil ways inside the engine. This can lead to oil starvation in certain areas of the engine and cause severe problems. The answer is to avoid the sludge in the first place with regular servicing!
